Pain Education - Stimulus

When stimuli are perceived ( for eg, a thorn), they send a warning signal to your spinal cord, which can in turn send a signal to your brain. This causes body movement to avoid it. This is called nociceptive reflex. Sometimes it can cause pain for eg, if you touched the thorn without realizing it was there.

Moseley, Lorimer & Vlaeyen, Johannes. (2015). Beyond nociception: the imprecision hypothesis chronic pain. Pain. 156. 10.1016/j.pain.0000000000000014.

Similar to the Pavlov Reflex in the human,

A: When an original unconditioned/ natural stimulus (US) causes a nociceptive reflex causing pain ( as a natural or unconditioned response). eg lifting heavy objects/ overuse causing pain.

B: When conditioned stimulus ( blue and dark blue CS) is associated with the original natural stimulus, also resulting in the same natural /unconditioned response of pain. eg the rooms where you typically lifted the heavy objects

C: When conditioned stimulus ( blue and dark blue CS) by itself, results in the same pain, this time as a conditioned response. eg just the rooms or work / home place where you lifted heavy objects before
