Goals of treatment of chronic back pain

  1. Improve ability to move

  2. Improve range of motion

  3. Decrease pain

  4. Decrease fear of movement

  5. Decrease future pain flare ups.

If your back pain has lasted more than 6 months or has led to quitting work, no treatment is likely to cause complete pain relief. A combination of exercise and behavior therapy is most likely to achieve the above goals long term.

Aim for long-term improvements in pain, disability and quality of life, rather than a short-term relief. This increases empowerment and personal control over the symptoms.

A multimodal lifestyle-centered approach
