Pain Pump

A narrow tube is placed inside the spine. A pump is placed in the belly superficial fat and connected to the tube. The pump reservoir holds the medication(s), and the pump is programmed to give a set dose of medication over time. A trial may be done, and if successful, a permanent pump may be placed. It is used only when/ for:

Chronic severe back pain significantly interfering daily function and activities

There is a cause established for the pain

Atleast 6 months of rehabilitation including medicines (including opioids), exercises and behavior therapy have not helped

Further surgeries or other treatments not likely to be effective

Documentation of no underlying mental health conditions/issues (e.g., depression, drug, alcohol abuse) as a major contributor to chronic pain

May have to agree to a 50% reduction in opioid medicines
